Chlorine Dioxide Chlorine dioxide is an unstable gas used in very dilute concentrations for water disinfection, regulated by the EPA to safe levels. In supplements, chlorine dioxide has been marketed as a 'natural' remedy for various types of infections under several different names, including Miracle or Master Mineral Solution, Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS), Chlorine Dioxide (CD) Protocol, and Water Purification Solution (WPS). These supplements involve mixing sodium chlorite with citric acid (as an 'activator') to produce chlorine dioxide in dangerously high concentrations. The use of chlorine dioxide as a dietary supplement is not recommended and has received warnings from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Consuming these supplements can lead to severe health complications, including vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, hemolysis, and acute liver failure.
