Gamma-oryzanol Drug Interactions, Uses, Effectiveness, Safety & More
What is this page for?
First and foremost: how Gamma-oryzanol interacts with medications. The heart of this page is the interaction list — every drug Gamma-oryzanol is known to interact with, and how serious each one is.
But these pages have grown well beyond that into a full monograph — what Gamma-oryzanol is, what people use it for and how strong the evidence is, its safety and side effects, and answers to the questions we’re asked most — written and reviewed by the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases, not medical advice, and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean
Severity — How Serious It Can Be
- Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
- Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
- Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
- No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.
Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented
- Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
- Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
- Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Overview
Gamma-oryzanol is a natural mixture of plant compounds found in rice bran oil. It is made up of substances called ferulic acid esters, sterols, and triterpene alcohols. Rice (Oryza sativa) is grown widely around the world, and the bran is the outer layer of the grain that is usually removed during milling.
Gamma-oryzanol has been used for many years, especially in Japan, where it was studied as a treatment for several conditions. Today it is sold as a dietary supplement in capsules, tablets, and powders, and it is sometimes added to skin and cosmetic products. People take it most often for cholesterol, menopause-related symptoms, and as a bodybuilding or athletic supplement.
How it works
Gamma-oryzanol contains ferulic acid and plant sterols, which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals.
For cholesterol, researchers think the plant sterols in gamma-oryzanol may reduce how much cholesterol the body absorbs from food. For menopause and mood, some early theories suggest it may affect hormone signals in the brain, but this is not well understood.
It is important to know that many of these proposed mechanisms come from laboratory or animal studies. How well they apply to people taking supplements is still unclear.

How to read these evidence grades
Natural Medicines’ 7-point scale. We show each rating’s label word-for-word.
Possibly Effective Dyslipidemia
Small studies show that oral gamma-oryzanol might decrease total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in patients with dyslipidemia.
Also studied for 5 conditions — evidence insufficient to rate
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Athletic performance
Although there is interest in using oral gamma-oryzanol to improve athletic performance, there is insufficient reliable information about the clinical effects of gamma-oryzanol for this purpose.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
It is unclear if topical gamma-oryzanol is beneficial for eczema in children.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Hypertension
Oral gamma-oryzanol has only been evaluated in combination with sesame oil; its benefits when used alone are unclear.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Menopausal symptoms
It is unclear if oral gamma-oryzanol is beneficial in the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Muscle strength
It is unclear if oral gamma-oryzanol is beneficial for improving muscle strength.

This is educational information, not medical advice — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing a supplement.
Safety & precautions
Gamma-oryzanol appears to be generally well tolerated in the studies done so far, but its long-term safety has not been carefully studied. Because it comes from rice, people with a rice allergy should be cautious or avoid it.
If you have a medical condition or take prescription medicines, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting gamma-oryzanol. Supplements are not closely regulated, so product quality and strength can vary.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough reliable safety information for these situations. To be safe, it is best to avoid gamma-oryzanol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Side effects
Gamma-oryzanol is usually well tolerated. When side effects happen, they are typically mild and may include stomach upset, nausea, or drowsiness.
Serious side effects are not commonly reported, but because long-term use has not been well studied, the full safety picture is unclear. Stop using it and contact a healthcare provider if you notice an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing.
Dosing
There is no official or standardized dose for gamma-oryzanol. Doses used in research have varied widely, and what works for one use may not apply to another.
The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not take more than recommended. Because products differ in strength and quality, check with your pharmacist or doctor to decide whether it is appropriate for you and what amount is reasonable.
