Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a natural antioxidant enzyme your body makes to help neutralize harmful free radicals. While it has clear biological importance, oral supplements may be broken down during digestion, and strong human evidence that taking SOD supplements improves health is limited. Overview
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that your body naturally produces. It is one of the body's main antioxidant defenses, helping to control harmful molecules called free radicals. SOD is found in nearly every cell of the body and also exists in many plants, animals, and microbes.
As a supplement, SOD is usually made from plant sources (such as a special variety of cantaloupe melon), from animal sources like bovine liver, or produced by microorganisms. It comes in capsules, tablets, and topical skin creams. Some research has used injectable forms, but these are not common over-the-counter products.
People take SOD hoping to fight oxidative stress, support healthy skin and aging, ease joint discomfort, and aid recovery from exercise. These are popular and traditional reasons for use and do not mean the supplement is proven to work for these purposes.
How it works
Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells over time. One especially reactive type is the superoxide radical. SOD's job is to convert superoxide into less harmful substances, which are then broken down further by other enzymes like catalase and glutathione peroxidase.
This makes SOD a key part of the body's built-in antioxidant system. The idea behind supplements is to boost this protective activity.
One challenge is that SOD is a protein. When taken by mouth, stomach acid and digestive enzymes may break it down before it can be absorbed, which is why some products use special coatings designed to protect the enzyme. Whether this leads to meaningful effects in the body is still being studied. Much of the supporting science is based on laboratory and animal research.

Intra-articular injection of superoxide dismutase may reduce pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. It is unclear if oral superoxide dismutase is beneficial in these patients.
Possibly Effective Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
Intra-articular injection of superoxide dismutase may reduce knee stiffness, flexion, and pain in patients with RA affecting the knees. It is unclear if oral superoxide dismutase is beneficial in these patients.
Likely Ineffective Myocardial infarction (MI)
Intravenous superoxide dismutase may not confer additional benefits in patients with acute MI undergoing thrombolysis or coronary angioplasty.

Safety & precautions
SOD is a natural part of the body, and short-term use of supplements appears to be low-risk for most healthy adults. However, the long-term safety of supplements has not been well studied.
People with allergies should check product labels carefully. Some coated SOD products contain wheat-derived gliadin, which may be a concern for those with celiac disease or wheat allergy. Animal-sourced products (like bovine forms) may also raise concerns for some people.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough reliable safety information for these situations, so it is best to avoid SOD supplements during pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.
If you have a chronic health condition or take prescription medicines, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting SOD.
Side effects
SOD supplements are not widely reported to cause serious side effects, but they have not been studied enough to fully understand their safety profile.
Possible mild effects could include digestive upset, such as stomach discomfort. Allergic reactions are possible, especially with products that contain wheat-derived or animal-derived ingredients.
If you notice signs of an allergic reaction—such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing—stop using the product and seek medical care right away.

Encephalitis Neurologic/CNS
Superoxide dismutase may be prepared from bovine liver. Products made from contaminated or diseased organs might present a human health hazard. There is also concern that spleen extracts produced from cows in countries where bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) has been reported might be contaminated with diseased tissue. Thus far, there have been no reports of BSE transfer to humans from contaminated SOD products.

Pain Musculoskeletal
As an injection, superoxide dismutase can cause pain at the injection site in some patients.

Dosing
There is no well-established standard dose for superoxide dismutase supplements. Doses vary widely between products and forms.
