by NutraBio
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Lysine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-Lysine HCl, an amino acid your body uses to build and repair proteins. L-lysine is essential — your body can't make it, so you have to get it from food or supplements.
It's found naturally in meat, fish, dairy, and legumes.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis). The evidence supports its use for this purpose, though it's not a cure — it may help manage outbreaks or duration.
For other uses listed here — child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers — there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. However, high amounts may cause stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion.
Long-term safety of supplement doses hasn't been well studied. There's one case report of oral lysine linked to kidney inflammation that progressed to chronic kidney disease, though this is rare.
Supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn't been well studied. Lysine from food is fine, but if you're pregnant or breastfeeding and considering a supplement, talk with your doctor first to decide what's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist — a drug used for certain digestive or bowel conditions — check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking L-lysine, since the supplement may reduce its effectiveness.
The bottom line

L-lysine may help manage cold sores, and it's generally well tolerated at usual doses. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take a 5-HT4 agonist, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

L-Lysine by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Lysine HCl by NutraBio has one documented interaction.
Through its lysine content, it may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists (drugs that work on a specific serotonin receptor to treat certain gut conditions). Animal research suggests lysine acts as a partial blocker of this receptor, which could theoretically lessen how well these medications work.
