Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-Citrulline at 500 milligrams per capsule. The capsule itself is made from a vegetable-based material.

L-Citrulline is an amino acid your body naturally produces; when you take it as a supplement, your body converts it to another amino acid, L-arginine, which plays a role in blood vessel function and circulation.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded L-citrulline's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports L-citrulline for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Athletic performance — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

L-Citrulline is possibly effective for athletic performance — some evidence supports its use to help with exercise capacity and endurance. For sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), the evidence rates as possibly ineffective.

For cardiovascular disease, heart failure, Reye syndrome, and diabetes, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works. If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist about what the research actually shows for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-Citrulline is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though long-term safety hasn't been fully studied. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — stomach discomfort, heartburn, and general GI upset.

A small number of patients taking it reported cough, though this was uncommon. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so the recommendation is to avoid it.

The same applies to breastfeeding — safety is unknown, so supplemental use is best avoided while nursing. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding and thinking about L-Citrulline, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-Citrulline may be worth considering if you're looking to support athletic performance, but it's not proven for most other uses. If you take blood pressure medication or erectile dysfunction drugs, check with your pharmacist first — the combination could lower your blood pressure more than expected.

Stomach upset is the main side effect to watch for.

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of L-citrulline with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the chance of hypotension.
L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine, which can increase nitric oxide and cause vasodilation. However, a meta-analysis of 5 small clinical studies suggests that taking L-citrulline 3-6 grams daily for 1-8 weeks does not lower blood pressure when compared with control.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors

Theoretically, concurrent use of phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors and L-citrulline might result in additive vasodilation.
L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine, which can increase nitric oxide and cause vasodilation. Theoretically, taking L-arginine with PDE-5 inhibitors might have additive vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. However, in studies evaluating the combined use of L-arginine and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, hypotension was not reported.

100% Pure L-Citrulline 500 Milligrams by NutraBio: Common Questions

Does 100% Pure L-Citrulline 500 Milligrams by NutraBio interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, 100% Pure L-Citrulline 500 Milligrams has a known interaction with 178 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
100% Pure L-Citrulline 500 Milligrams contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-Citrulline and what does it do in my body?
L-Citrulline is an amino acid — a building block your body already makes naturally. When you take it as a supplement, your body converts it to another amino acid called L-arginine, which helps relax blood vessels and improves blood flow.
Can I take this if I'm on blood pressure medication?
Not without checking first. L-Citrulline can lower blood pressure, and combining it with blood pressure medication could drop your pressure too much. Talk to your pharmacist — they can look at your specific medication and tell you whether it's okay for you.
Does it help with exercise and athletic performance?
L-Citrulline is possibly effective for athletic performance — meaning some research supports it, but it's not proven. If you're thinking about it for that reason, your results may vary, and it won't be a game-changer for everyone.
What side effects should I expect?
Most people tolerate it well, but stomach discomfort and heartburn are the common complaints. A few people reported cough, but that's rare. If you have a sensitive stomach, start low and see how you feel.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy, so it's best to avoid it. The same goes for breastfeeding — safety is unknown. Talk with your doctor before using it if you're pregnant or nursing.
