Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: 7-oxo-DHEA acetate (also called 7-keto-DHEA), a compound that's structurally related to DHEA but is not converted to testosterone or estrogen in your body. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose (a filler), stearic acid, and magnesium stearate — that help hold it together.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see 7-keto-dhea's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: weight management and metabolic support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Obesity, body composition, fat loss, metabolic rate.
  • The closest evidence on file: 7-keto-dhea is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Obesity (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for 7-keto-DHEA is still being sorted out. We hold insufficient evidence to rate its effectiveness for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obesity, depression, Raynaud syndrome, or aging.

In plain terms, that means we don't yet have reliable research showing whether it actually works for any of these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Short-term use appears to be generally well tolerated in small studies, but long-term safety isn't well established — so we don't really know what happens if you take it for months or years. A case report noted decreased red blood cell counts (hemoglobin and hematocrit) in one person taking a much higher dose (50 mg daily) for a week, though the real-world significance isn't clear.

Two people in clinical trials reported nausea, and one reported vertigo (dizziness). The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe, and hormone-related supplements are best avoided in these situations.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Formula

DHEA Metabolite

7-Keto is a naturally occurring metabolite of DHEA, an abundant hormone in human blood. Human clinical trials have shown that 7-Keto increases metabolic rate and therefore, 7-Keto can help with maintenance of healthy weight when taken in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise plan. As shown in preclinical research, 7-Keto is a potent inducer of thermogenic enzymes. 7-Keto is not converted to estrogens or androgens, a point of concern for many people.

7-Keto 100 mg by Source Naturals: Common Questions

Does 7-Keto 100 mg by Source Naturals interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in 7-Keto 100 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
7-Keto 100 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is 7-Keto safe to take long-term?
We don't know. Short-term use in small studies appears tolerated, but long-term safety hasn't been studied well enough to say whether it's safe for months or years. If you're thinking about taking it regularly, check in with your pharmacist first.
Does 7-Keto actually work for weight loss or aging?
The evidence isn't there yet. We have insufficient reliable evidence to say whether it works for obesity, aging, depression, PTSD, or Raynaud syndrome. You might see marketing claims, but the research backing those claims isn't solid.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against it. There isn't enough information to know it's safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and hormone-related supplements are best avoided in these situations. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
What side effects has 7-Keto been linked to?
In clinical trials, a few people reported nausea or dizziness. One person taking a much higher dose reported drops in red blood cell counts, though we don't know if that's a real risk at the dose in this product. Most people who've tried it short-term haven't reported problems.
Is 7-Keto the same as DHEA?
No — 7-keto-DHEA is made from DHEA but doesn't convert to testosterone or estrogen in your body the way regular DHEA does. That's why it's marketed as an alternative, but the evidence for it is just as limited.
