Bromelain (from pineapple) breaks down proteins; lactase handles milk sugars; lipase breaks down fats; cellulase, hemicellulase, and a vegetal pancreatin analog work on fiber and plant material; acid-stable protease breaks down proteins in acidic stomach conditions; and alpha-amylase and amyloglucosidase help break down starches and complex carbohydrates.

Overall, the enzyme blend is generally well tolerated when used as directed. Bromelain may cause diarrhea, flatulence, gastric upset, or headache when taken by mouth.

Allergic reactions (including asthma if inhaled) can occur, particularly in people sensitive to pineapple or with occupational enzyme exposure. Lactase has one reported case of allergic reaction but is otherwise well tolerated.

Lipase and proteases are well tolerated in supplement form for most adults, though no adverse effects have been formally documented for lipase. Long-term safety data for bromelain is limited.

You are what you absorb - not what you eat, and unfortunately the readily available processed foods we reach for when we're short on time are devoid of the naturally occurring digestive enzymes we need to properly assimilate our nutrients. 9-zymes contains nine key enzymes to help break down the protein, carbs and fats we eat for easier digestions, improved nutrient absorption, and reduced abdominal bloating.
