L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. It's been rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease and there's insufficient evidence for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
S. thermophilus hasn't yet accumulated enough reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for any condition — we're still learning what it can do. The other three ingredients in this blend don't have established effectiveness ratings in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea — these are uncommon. Because L. acidophilus contains live organisms, there's a theoretical concern that it could cause infection in patients with severely weakened immune systems; most documented cases occurred in people with serious underlying illness or central lines.
For pregnancy, the data suggests it's possibly safe, though you should check with your doctor first. S. thermophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but those with weakened immune systems should be careful.
It's been reported in severe infections only in people with central catheters or severe illness. The safety data on these supplements is limited, so ask your healthcare provider before use, especially if you're pregnant.
