What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: 10 mg of lycopene, a red pigment found naturally in tomatoes and other fruits. Lycopene is an antioxidant your body uses to help manage oxidative stress.
The capsule itself is made with soybean oil, gelatin, corn oil, vegetable glycerin, and yellow beeswax.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on lycopene is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for prostate cancer, which is the strongest evidence we have for this ingredient.
For bladder cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence either doesn't support its use or isn't reliable enough to rate. For exercise-induced asthma and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), we simply don't have enough data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. That said, oral supplements can cause gastrointestinal side effects in some people — including diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite.
One case report noted chest pain in a pregnant person taking a different lycopene product, though a causal link wasn't established. For pregnancy, the safety data advises against supplements unless your doctor advises otherwise, though food amounts are fine.
The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety data on supplements, but ordinary dietary lycopene is okay.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs you're taking — blood thinners like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and similar medications. Lycopene may increase bleeding risk with these.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in lycopene for prostate health, this supplement is possibly effective and generally well tolerated. However, if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first — the bleeding risk is real.
