Agar Agar Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Agar Agar against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Agar Agar by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient, agar agar extract (dry powder). Agar is a high-fiber ingredient that forms a gel in the digestive tract, which is the reason it can affect how nutrients and medications are absorbed.
The inactive ingredients listed are alcohol, water, and glycerin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Our data rates agar for diabetes, obesity, and neonatal jaundice as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate. In other words, whether it works for any of these purposes has not been established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Agar is generally well tolerated as a food. Supplement doses should be taken with plenty of water, because without enough fluid, agar can cause a blockage.
Our safety notes also say that concentrated supplement doses should only be taken if your doctor approves, and that there is little safety data on supplement doses. No adverse effects have been reported orally, although a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.
Rarely, a blockage of fiber (phytobezoars) and blockages in the esophagus or bowel have been reported after eating high-fiber foods such as agar. Pregnancy and breastfeeding information is not on file for this ingredient, so there isn't enough information to say either way.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
The medication type to double-check is oral drugs, which carry a Minor severity rating for agar. Because agar can affect absorption, review your oral medications with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Use the search tool on this page to look up your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you are considering agar for a purpose, know that the evidence for diabetes, obesity, and neonatal jaundice has not been established. If you take any oral medication, be aware that agar may affect how your body absorbs it, and take the product with plenty of water.
Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start.
