Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: mullein leaf extract, a concentrated form of the mullein plant. It comes in a liquid form with vegetable glycerin and purified water as inactive ingredients — no alcohol or added sugar.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Mullein product and its label doesn't state a use — see Mullein's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for mullein leaf in treating cough, bronchitis, asthma, migraine headache, and diarrhea is insufficient in the data we hold. That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means reliable human studies establishing its benefit for these uses aren't available yet.

If you're considering this for a specific condition, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current evidence does and doesn't support.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mullein leaf extract is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited. A small number of case reports have described contact dermatitis (skin irritation) after direct skin contact with the whole plant or from breathing in plant dust — usually in people who also reacted to other plants.

There isn't enough data to recommend this during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Mullein.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs) — including warfarin, aspirin, and similar medications — may have their effects slightly increased by mullein leaf extract. Check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Mullein leaf extract is generally well tolerated and may appeal to people interested in traditional respiratory support — but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't yet established. If you take blood thinners, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

For pregnancy or breastfeeding, the safety data are too limited to recommend it without a healthcare provider's input.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Lab tests on extracts from different parts of common and dense-flowered mullein plants show that they do have some blood-thinning effects, as they increase the time it takes for blood to clot. This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.

Alcohol & Sugar-Free Mullein Leaf Liquid Extract by Swanson Premium Brand: Common Questions

Does Alcohol & Sugar-Free Mullein Leaf Liquid Extract by Swanson Premium Brand interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Alcohol & Sugar-Free Mullein Leaf Liquid Extract has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Alcohol & Sugar-Free Mullein Leaf Liquid Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does mullein leaf extract really work for cough or bronchitis?
The evidence isn't established in the data we hold. While mullein is used traditionally for respiratory issues, there aren't enough reliable human studies yet to confirm it works for cough, bronchitis, asthma, or other conditions. Talk with your doctor about what you're trying to treat and what options have solid evidence behind them.
Can I take this if I'm on a blood thinner like warfarin or aspirin?
Mullein leaf does have mild blood-thinning effects, so it could theoretically add to what your blood thinner is already doing. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it — they know your exact medication and dose and can tell you whether it's safe to combine.
Is mullein leaf safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to recommend it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing — they can help you decide what's right for your situation.
What are the side effects?
Mullein leaf extract is generally well tolerated, though human safety data are limited. A small number of case reports mention skin irritation (dermatitis) after direct contact with the plant or from breathing in plant dust, usually in people who also reacted to other plants.
What's in this besides the mullein?
The inactive ingredients are vegetable glycerin and purified water — no alcohol or added sugar, as the name says.
