Alfalfa leaf in food amounts is generally well tolerated, but supplement doses are a different story. The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, flatulence, and gas—especially in the first week of use.

Dermatitis (skin inflammation) has been reported with chronic use. Rarely, a lupus-like syndrome has occurred after long-term ingestion.

Theoretically, alfalfa might reduce the anticoagulant activity of warfarin.
Alfalfa contains a large amount of vitamin K. This could theoretically interfere with the activity of warfarin.
