Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: Artemisia annua (sweet annie) flowering aerial parts extract. The extract also contains cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for Artemisia annua is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) — meaning there's some promising research, but it's not conclusive.
For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis, the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken by mouth short-term, Artemisia annua is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting.
Rarely, it may cause liver damage — one documented case involved a person who developed hepatitis after taking artemisinin (a constituent of sweet annie) at a high dose for 10 days and recovered after stopping. A mild allergic reaction with a rash and cough has been reported rarely; people allergic to sweet annie who take it under the tongue may experience tongue numbness or throat itching.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because of possible harm to the developing baby. Not enough safety information exists to use this while breastfeeding — talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check this product with your pharmacist if you take any drugs that are hard on the liver, or medications metabolized by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 — all Moderate interactions. These include many common blood pressure drugs, cholesterol medications, and antihistamines, among hundreds of others.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Artemisia annua may help with hay fever symptoms, but the evidence isn't strong, and it carries real concerns — mainly its effect on how your liver breaks down medications and a small risk of liver damage. If you take any prescription drugs, especially those metabolized by your liver, check with your pharmacist before starting.
Steer clear if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Artemisia annua by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Artemisia annua extract interacts with medications in several important ways.
The biggest concern is with drugs that are hard on the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) — using this supplement at the same time might add to that liver stress and cause harm. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The extract also affects how your body breaks down two major groups of medications. It can alter blood levels of drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — a Moderate interaction that includes everything from certain blood pressure and cholesterol drugs to some antihistamines and immunosuppressants.
Similarly, it interacts with drugs cleared by CYP2B6 (also Moderate), a smaller group that includes some pain relievers and antiretrovirals. In both cases, the extract may either raise or lower drug levels in unpredictable ways depending on which other ingredients in the plant are dominant.
Altogether, these interactions span 870 individual medications. Because the extract's effect on these enzymes is unclear from the available data, you'll want to run your exact medications through the checker below before starting this product.

Artemisia Annua Flowering Aerial Parts Extract
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
