What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Artemisia annua, also called Sweet Annie. There are no inactive ingredients listed in the formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for Artemisia Annua is limited. It's rated possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), meaning there's some early support but it's not conclusive.
For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis, the evidence we have is insufficient to say whether it works. This isn't a proven treatment for any of these conditions yet, so talk with us about what you're hoping to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, Sweet Annie is generally well tolerated in the short term, though it does vary in quality and dose from product to product. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting.
Rare cases of liver damage (hepatotoxicity) have been reported — in one instance, a patient developed hepatitis after taking a related component at high dose and recovered after stopping. There's also been one mild allergic reaction reported, with rash and cough that resolved on its own.
If you take it sublingually and are allergic to it, numbness of the tongue and throat itching have been noted. Avoid this product during pregnancy because of possible harm to your developing baby.
Do not use while breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety information to know either way. Because quality and dose vary so much between products, Sweet Annie shouldn't replace proven treatments for any condition.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Artemisia Annua, check any medications you take that are broken down by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — this includes many cholesterol, heart, blood pressure, and immunosuppressant drugs. Also be cautious if you're on any medication that stresses your liver.
Sweet Annie may raise or lower the levels of these drugs unpredictably, so your dosing may need adjustment.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement might be worth considering if you're interested in natural support for hay fever symptoms, though the evidence is still developing. If you take any prescription medications or drugs that affect your liver, check them against our interaction tool first — the way Sweet Annie affects liver enzymes is unpredictable.
Skip it entirely if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk with us before starting, especially if you have liver concerns.

Artemisia annua monograph & interactionsArtemisia Annua by Samsara Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Artemisia Annua by Samsara Herbs contains one active ingredient, Sweet Annie, which has documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is with drugs metabolized by your liver's enzyme systems. Sweet Annie may alter how your body processes drugs broken down by CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes — two major pathways for many common medications.
The research here is mixed: one component of Sweet Annie appears to speed up these enzymes, while the whole plant extract seems to slow them down, making the net effect unpredictable.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because of this uncertainty, you'll want to be especially careful if you take medications that depend on these liver enzymes — things like certain cholesterol drugs, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressants can be affected. Additionally, there's concern about additive liver damage if you're already taking medications that stress the liver.
Additionally, Sweet Annie is generally well tolerated when used short-term. Altogether, these interactions span 870 individual medications.
We'd recommend running any prescription or regular over-the-counter medications through the interaction checker below before starting this product.

Artemisia annua
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
