The evidence for Artemisia Annua is limited. It's rated possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), meaning there's some early support but it's not conclusive.
For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis, the evidence we have is insufficient to say whether it works. This isn't a proven treatment for any of these conditions yet, so talk with us about what you're hoping to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, Sweet Annie is generally well tolerated in the short term, though it does vary in quality and dose from product to product. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting.
Rare cases of liver damage (hepatotoxicity) have been reported — in one instance, a patient developed hepatitis after taking a related component at high dose and recovered after stopping. There's also been one mild allergic reaction reported, with rash and cough that resolved on its own.
If you take it sublingually and are allergic to it, numbness of the tongue and throat itching have been noted. Avoid this product during pregnancy because of possible harm to your developing baby.
Do not use while breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety information to know either way. Because quality and dose vary so much between products, Sweet Annie shouldn't replace proven treatments for any condition.

Formula
Description Also known as sweet wormwood, Artemisia Annua has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. In Eastern tradition, they believe it to regulate healthy blood as well as healthy allergy response. It is suggested it is used to promote normal digestion, menstruation, and liver function. Our water soluble herbal extracts are best mixed in juice or a smoothie, although mixing in water is perfectly fine if you can tolerate the taste.

Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
