Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: ashitaba extract in a concentrated 20:1 form, meaning the powder is made from 20 parts of the plant reduced to 1 part. There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Couldn't assess
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Ashitaba product and its label doesn't state a use — see Ashitaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The data we hold shows only one effectiveness claim for ashitaba: alcohol-related liver disease. That evidence rating is insufficient — meaning we don't have enough reliable studies to know whether it actually works for that condition.

If you're considering this supplement for another use, the evidence we have on file doesn't cover it.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Ashitaba used as a food has been generally well tolerated, but concentrated supplement safety hasn't been studied well enough to confirm it's safe across the board. The safety data advises against using this concentrated supplement during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know whether it could affect you or your baby, so it's best to skip it during those times.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ashitaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 186 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check any medications that are broken down by the liver enzyme CYP1A2 (drug substrates). These are processed more slowly when ashitaba is present, raising the risk of side effects.

Use the medication search tool on this page to see if any of your drugs fall into that group.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.

If you're not pregnant or breastfeeding and you want to try ashitaba as a supplement, check your medications first — especially anything your liver processes. Bring the interaction checker results to your pharmacist, since we know this product *could* slow how your body clears certain drugs, even though it hasn't been proven to cause problems in real patients yet.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.

Ashitaba 20:1 Concentrated Extract by Samsara Herbs: Common Questions

Does Ashitaba 20:1 Concentrated Extract by Samsara Herbs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Ashitaba 20:1 Concentrated Extract has a known interaction with 186 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Ashitaba 20:1 Concentrated Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is ashitaba safe while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against this concentrated supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe for you or your baby. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about your options if you're considering it.
What is ashitaba supposed to do?
The only effectiveness claim we have data for is alcohol-related liver disease, but that evidence is too limited to say whether ashitaba actually works for it. We don't have reliable evidence for other uses.
Has ashitaba extract been studied for safety?
Ashitaba used as food has been generally well tolerated, but concentrated supplement safety hasn't been well studied. That's why the pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions are in place — we just don't have enough data yet.
Can ashitaba really interact with 186 medications?
Ashitaba slows down a liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that breaks down a large number of different drugs. That's why 186 medications could theoretically be affected. The important thing is to check your specific medications using the tool on this page, not to assume all 186 apply to you.
