Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Ashitaba Powder by Samsara Herbs is a single-ingredient supplement — just the ashitaba plant in powder form. There are no inactive fillers or other added ingredients listed.

Ashitaba is a leafy plant used traditionally in Asian cuisine and supplements, and this product gives you the whole plant material.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Ashitaba product and its label doesn't state a use — see Ashitaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that ashitaba works for alcohol-related liver disease — the data rates it as having insufficient reliable evidence. That doesn't mean it doesn't help; it means the research isn't solid enough yet to say either way.

How safe is it?

Some data gaps
Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Ashitaba is likely safe when you eat it as a food, but safety data for concentrated supplements like this powder is sparse. The safety notes advise against it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough data to know either way.

If you're pregnant or nursing and thinking about this product, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ashitaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 186 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check any medications you take against the interaction tool on this page. Ashitaba may interact with drugs processed by the liver enzyme CYP1A2 (a Moderate-severity concern), which includes a large group of medications.

Until human cases are reported, use it only with your doctor's or pharmacist's okay if you're on a CYP1A2 substrate.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.

Ashitaba may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional plant supplements, but the evidence for liver health isn't established yet in the data we hold. Check your medications first — it may slow how your body clears certain drugs.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? There's not enough safety data, so run it past your doctor or pharmacist.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.
