Astragalus Ingredients & Drug Interactions

What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Astragalus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic astragalus extract. Astragalus is an herb traditionally used to support immune function and overall wellness.
The capsule also contains vegetable cellulose as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astragalus isn't established in the data we hold. The conditions studied — hay fever, amenorrhea, aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia — all have insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean astragalus doesn't work; it means the research isn't solid enough yet to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults, but quality human safety data is limited. In clinical trials and studies, it's been associated with rare reports of dizziness, a type of chest pain called lacunar angina, and palpitations with rapid intravenous dosing — though these effects may not have been caused by astragalus itself.
Intravenous administration has also been linked to rash and itching in some cases. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety data to recommend astragalus.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice on whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking this product if you're on immunosuppressants, lithium, cyclophosphamide, or diabetes medications. All four carry moderate-severity interactions with astragalus.
Your own doctor or pharmacist can help you decide if it's safe to combine.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astragalus might be worth considering if you're an adult looking to support immune function and you don't take immunosuppressants, lithium, cyclophosphamide, or diabetes medications. If you do take any of those, or you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
The evidence for specific health claims is still limited.

Astragalus by plnt Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus by plnt has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant drugs — astragalus seems to stimulate immune function, which could theoretically reduce how well these medications work. That's a moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take lithium for mood disorders. Animal research suggests astragalus has diuretic properties that might reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising its levels and side effects.
Similarly, if you're on cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapy drug), astragalus might interfere with how it works, though the evidence is mixed. And if you take diabetes medications, astragalus might lower your blood sugar on its own — combined with your drugs, that could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the search tool on this page before you start.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking astragalus with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research in humans shows that astragalus might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking astragalus, especially in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
