Axulin contains four ingredients. The active ones are chromium, cichorium, lactuca, and tarragon.
Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and is used when chromium intake from food is low. Cichorium, lactuca (lettuce), and tarragon are plant-based ingredients; tarragon has been studied for nausea relief.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients—dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, and magnesium stearate—which act as binders, fillers, and flow agents to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency and possibly effective for diabetes. For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence rates as possibly ineffective.
Tarragon has been studied for postoperative nausea and vomiting, but the evidence is insufficient to rate its effectiveness for this use. We hold no effectiveness data for cichorium or lactuca in our records.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects—kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts—have been reported, as have skin rashes and hives. High or long-term doses carry unknown risks, so avoid extra chromium unless your doctor recommends it.
Tarragon has no reported adverse effects, though long-term estragole exposure (a tarragon component) raises theoretical cancer risk in animal studies. During pregnancy, medicinal tarragon should be avoided, though food amounts are likely safe; during breastfeeding, avoid medicinal amounts due to insufficient safety data.
Chromium from balanced diet or prenatal vitamins is generally acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless advised by your doctor.

Also flag MAOIs (a class of older antidepressant), CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, barbiturates, antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants), and levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) before you start. NSAIDs and aspirin may raise chromium levels slightly.

Chromium poses the most serious concern: it may lower blood sugar (glucose) and increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with antidiabetic drugs or insulin. Research shows chromium can reduce how much levothyroxine (thyroid replacement) your body absorbs—one study found a 17% drop in thyroid hormone levels—so these two should be taken several hours apart.

Tarragon in this product interacts with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel, and similar medications) by theoretically raising bleeding risk. It may also enhance the effects of MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors, an older class of antidepressant) and amplify sedation when taken alongside CNS depressants like benzodiazepines, barbiturates, antihistamines, or tricyclic antidepressants.

Tarragon
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Evidence from in vitro research suggests that tarragon extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, tarragon might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Cns Depressants
Evidence from animal research suggests that tarragon essential oil can cause sedation and motor impairment when administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 1 mL/kg. Theoretically, concomitant use of tarragon with CNS depressants, including antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and tricyclic antidepressants, may increase sedative and other adverse effects.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
In vitro research suggests that tarragon extract inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO)-A and MAO-B enzymes. Theoretically, concomitant use with MAOIs might increase the effects and adverse effects associated with MAOIs.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
