Chromium and Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs)

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine

Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine falls under NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) — the group Chromium interacts with.

NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's a flip on what you might expect: in this case, the medicine affects the supplement, not the other way around. The aspirin in your Excedrin is an NSAID, and NSAIDs may slightly boost how much chromium your body absorbs and holds onto. The acetaminophen and caffeine pieces aren't really the players here.

The good news is this is rated as a minor, mostly theoretical concern based on how these drugs work, not on solid human studies showing harm. For an occasional Excedrin for a headache, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you take a chromium supplement daily and use aspirin-containing products regularly, just give your pharmacist a heads-up so they can keep an eye on things.

Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.

Here's the thing to know about combining chromium with Excedrin (which is acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine): the interaction runs in the opposite direction than you might expect. It's not that the medication changes the chromium dose's safety. Instead, the aspirin portion may nudge your body to absorb a bit more of the chromium, which could raise chromium levels in your blood slightly.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal studies only, so it's really more theory than something we see causing problems in real people. It's rated minor for good reason. For most folks taking an occasional Excedrin, this isn't something to lose sleep over. Still, if you take chromium daily, it never hurts to mention it to your pharmacist.

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
