Chromium and Insulin Glargine (rDNA)

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Insulin Glargine (rDNA) falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Insulin Glargine (rDNA)

Insulin Glargine (rDNA) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Chromium interacts with.

Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to know if you take Lantus (insulin glargine) and you're thinking about a chromium supplement. Chromium may help your body's own insulin work a little better, which can gently lower your blood sugar. Stack that on top of the insulin you're already injecting, and the two can add up. The concern is your sugar dropping too low (hypoglycemia).

Watch for shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or dizziness. Lantus is a long-acting insulin, so a low can sneak up overnight. This effect is most likely if your diabetes was poorly controlled before. I'm not telling you to avoid chromium, just don't add it on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your home glucose readings.

Here's the gist with Lantus (insulin glargine) and chromium. Chromium may help your body respond to insulin a little better, so the two of them working in the same direction could push your blood sugar lower than insulin alone would. The worry here is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can show up as shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

To be fair, this is mostly a theoretical concern, and chromium's blood-sugar effect tends to be modest and inconsistent. Still, since Lantus is a long-acting insulin, a lower-than-usual reading can sneak up on you. If you're thinking about chromium, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, keep an eye on your glucose, and don't change your insulin dose on your own.

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
