Chromium and Aspirin

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs)

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin

Aspirin falls under NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) — the group Chromium interacts with.

NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's a small one worth knowing about. Aspirin works by blocking substances called prostaglandins, and that same action seems to nudge your body into absorbing and holding onto a bit more chromium. So this isn't aspirin building up. It's the other way around: regular aspirin use could slightly raise your chromium levels.

Honestly, this is mostly theoretical, based on how these two behave in the body rather than real-world problems in patients. For most folks taking occasional aspirin, it's a non-issue. If you're on daily aspirin and a chromium supplement, especially while managing blood sugar, just mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things. No need to change anything on your own.

ASPIRIN

Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: it's the chromium that may be affected, not your aspirin. Based on some animal studies, aspirin might help your body absorb a bit more chromium, nudging chromium blood levels up slightly. Your aspirin keeps working the same way for pain, fever, or as a daily blood thinner.

I want to be honest about how flimsy this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal research, it's rated as a minor, theoretical interaction, and we don't have solid human data showing it matters. For most folks, taking everyday aspirin alongside chromium isn't something to lose sleep over. Still, if you take both regularly, mention it to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on the whole picture.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin page

“Aspirin thins the blood on purpose, and most of the 242 supplements and herbs on this page push that same effect further, so genuine care is warranted here rather than a shrug. Just over 200 of the entries can add to aspirin's antiplatelet action and raise the odds of bruising or bleeding, particularly in the stomach.”

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
