Isotretinoin brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, and others.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Chromium and Isotretinoin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Chromium and Isotretinoin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Isotretinoin and Chromium in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Isotretinoin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Isotretinoin is filed under 4 classifications — including retinoids, cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, photosensitizing drugs. Chromium has documented interactions with 5 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), insulin (moderate) and levothyroxine (synthroid, others) (moderate) — and none of Isotretinoin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Chromium and Isotretinoin May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 9 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Showing the 10 most notable of 21 shared effects — ranked by how unusual each one is, not just whether both lists mention it.

Reported for Chromium but not commonly for Isotretinoin: stomach upset, shortness of breath, heart failure and low blood sugar.

Effects for Isotretinoin come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Chromium come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 46,523 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Isotretinoin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

Chromium in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Likely Safe

When used orally and appropriately in amounts not exceeding adequate intake (AI) levels. The AI for pregnancy is 28 mcg daily for those 14-18 years of age and 30 mcg daily for those 19-50 years of age.

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When used orally in amounts exceeding the adequate intake (AI) levels. There is some evidence that patients with gestational diabetes can safely use chromium in doses of 4-8 mcg/kg; however, patients should not take chromium supplements during pregnancy without medical supervision.

Lactation Likely Safe

When used orally and appropriately in amounts not exceeding adequate intake (AI) levels. The AI for lactation is 44 mcg daily for those 14-18 years of age and 45 mcg daily for those 19-50 years of age. Chromium supplements do not seem to increase normal chromium concentration in human breast milk. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of chromium when used in higher amounts while breast-feeding.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Isotretinoin page

“Vitamin A is the first thing anyone on isotretinoin (Accutane, Absorica, Claravis) should check their supplements for, because isotretinoin is itself a vitamin A derivative and stacking more on top can push levels into toxic range. It is one of two major-rated entries among the 49 supplements and herbs known to interact with this acne…”

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.

Trace mineral (not a plant) · Capsules, tablets, gummies; common salt forms include chromium picolinate, chromium chloride, and chromium polynicotinate

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Chromium is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Chromium record says about it on its own.

Chromium: dosing

There is no single agreed-upon "best" dose of chromium as a supplement, and needs vary from person to person. Health authorities describe general daily intake amounts for adults to prevent deficiency, but these are not the same as the higher doses sometimes used in studies.Because products and strengths differ, it is best to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. They can help you decide if it is appropriate and at what dose.

About Isotretinoin

What Is Isotretinoin Used For?

Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane

Isotretinoin is used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne — large, deep, inflamed breakouts (nodules 5 mm or bigger) that haven't cleared with conventional treatments like antibiotics. It is approved for non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older. Brands include Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and generic isotretinoin capsules.

Because of its serious potential side effects, isotretinoin is reserved for patients whose acne is truly severe and has not responded to other standard treatments. A typical course lasts 15 to 20 weeks, and many patients experience prolonged remission — sometimes permanent clearing — after a single course.

Taking Chromium and Isotretinoin Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Chromium with Isotretinoin?
We do not list a known interaction between Chromium and Isotretinoin. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Chromium and Isotretinoin have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 10 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
How was the Chromium and Isotretinoin combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Isotretinoin is filed under 4 classifications, and Chromium has documented interactions with 5 drug classes — none of Isotretinoin's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Chromium interact with any other medications?
Yes. Chromium has 178 documented drug interactions in our database — Isotretinoin is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Isotretinoin interact with any supplements?
Yes. Isotretinoin has documented interactions with 49 supplements in our database — Chromium is not one of them. The Isotretinoin interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
