Chromium + Insulin (Human)
Insulin (Human) brand names: Novolin N, Novolin 70/30, Novolin R, Novolin L, Afrezza.
Insulin (Human) falls into 2 drug categories that Chromium can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Insulin (Human) falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Insulin (Human)
Insulin (Human) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Chromium interacts with.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: chromium may help your body's insulin work a little better, and you're already injecting insulin to push blood sugar down. Stack those two together and your sugar could drop lower than you expect. We call that a possible additive effect, meaning two things pulling in the same direction.
So watch for the usual low blood sugar warning signs with insulin: shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, dizziness, confusion, or sudden hunger. The research here is decent, but the effect from chromium is usually modest and shows up most in folks whose type 2 diabetes isn't well controlled. Please don't change your insulin dose on your own. If you want to try chromium, let your pharmacist or doctor know first so they can help you check your numbers more closely.

INSULIN
2 of 2In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep an eye on if you take chromium alongside your insulin (like Novolin R, Novolin N, or the 70/30 mix). Chromium may make your body a bit more sensitive to insulin, meaning your insulin could work a little harder than usual. Stack that on top of the insulin you're injecting, and your blood sugar could dip lower than you expect.
That can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or a racing heartbeat, the classic signs of low blood sugar. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical with some supporting clinical research, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, please don't change your insulin dose on your own. If you'd like to try chromium, loop in your doctor or pharmacist first so they can help you watch your numbers closely.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin (Human) page
“With human insulin (Novolin, Afrezza), extra glucose lowering is not a nuisance, it is the hazard itself, and this is one of the lists I treat as genuinely serious. Nearly every ingredient here either drops blood sugar on its own or adds to insulin's effect, and the combination can push a normal dose into hypoglycemia, a dangerous low.”

About Chromium
What is Chromium?
- Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
- Weight loss and appetite control
- Insulin sensitivity
- Cholesterol and lipid support
- General nutritional supplement
Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
About Human Insulin Injection
What Is Human Insulin Injection Used For?
Brand names: Novolin N, Novolin 70/30, Novolin R, Novolin L, Afrezza
Novolin (human insulin injection) is used to improve glycemic control — meaning blood sugar management — in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.
Novolin 70/30 is a fixed-ratio mixture of intermediate-acting and short-acting human insulin. Because the ratio is fixed, it cannot be adjusted separately for background (basal) or mealtime (prandial) needs.
