Chromium and Levothyroxine Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

LEVOTHYROXINE (Synthroid, others)

Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical issue with these two. When chromium and your levothyroxine are in your stomach at the same time, the chromium can grab onto the thyroid medicine and keep some of it from being absorbed. In one study, taking them together dropped levothyroxine levels by about 17%. That's a real, measurable dip, not just theory.

Why it matters: levothyroxine is a narrow therapeutic index drug, meaning your dose is finely tuned. Getting less of it over time could leave your thyroid undertreated, with symptoms like fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, or constipation creeping back. The easy fix is timing. Take your levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before, or 3 to 4 hours after, your chromium. Please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor so your levels stay on track.

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
