Chromium and Insulin determir

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chromium interacts with whole categories of medication. Insulin determir falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chromium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Insulin determir

Insulin determir falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Chromium interacts with.

Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: chromium may gently help your body respond to insulin and lower blood sugar on its own. Levemir (insulin detemir) already does the heavy lifting of pushing your blood sugar down. Stack the two together and those effects can add up, so your sugar could drop lower than you'd expect.

That means you'll want to watch for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can feel like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or dizziness. The good news is this is manageable. If you take Levemir and want to add chromium, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can help you check your numbers more closely and adjust if needed. Don't change your insulin dose on your own.

Here's the thing to know about pairing chromium with Levemir (insulin detemir): chromium may help your body's own insulin work a little better, meaning your cells take up sugar more easily. Stack that on top of the insulin you're injecting, and your blood sugar could drop lower than expected. That raises the chance of hypoglycemia, with signs like shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

This is rated a moderate, possible interaction, and the evidence is modest, so it's not a reason to panic. But if you're considering a chromium supplement, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first. They may want you to check your blood sugar a bit more closely at first. Please don't change your insulin dose on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin determir page

“Anyone using insulin detemir (Levemir) should treat this list with real caution, because nearly every one of the 242 ingredients on it acts on blood sugar, and most stack extra glucose-lowering on top of the insulin you already inject. Only two carry a major rating, but both deserve understanding first: Siberian cocklebur, which has ca…”

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
