Chromium and Muraglitazar

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Muraglitazar

Muraglitazar falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Chromium interacts with.

Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Muraglitazar (Pargluva) is a diabetes medication that helps your body respond better to insulin and lowers blood sugar. Chromium may nudge blood sugar down too. So when you take them together, those two sugar-lowering effects can stack up, and your blood sugar might drop lower than expected.

That means a slightly higher chance of hypoglycemia, which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, confusion, or a fast heartbeat. The good news is this is an additive effect, not a dangerous chemical clash, and food-level chromium is unlikely to cause trouble; concentrated supplements are more likely to matter. Please don't stop or change either one on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your blood sugar readings.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Muraglitazar page

“I read this list with genuine care, because muraglitazar (Pargluva) lowers blood sugar to treat type 2 diabetes, and 239 of the 256 supplements here can push that same lever. Most add to its effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar dropping too low; a smaller share, niacin among them, push sugar up instead.”

About Chromium

What is Chromium?

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
