Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: bamboo extract. Bamboo extract comes from bamboo shoots, which are boiled, fermented, or steam-dried to remove naturally occurring cyanide compounds that are toxic if left untreated.

The product has no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Bamboo product and its label doesn't state a use — see Bamboo's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether bamboo extract helps prevent tooth decay (dental caries). The data we have doesn't establish how well it works for that purpose.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bamboo shoots themselves are eaten widely around the world when properly cooked, but supplement safety isn't well studied. Raw bamboo shoots can be toxic because they contain cyanide glycosides — these are removed during boiling, fermentation, or steam drying, but the extraction and concentration process used here may not eliminate all risk.

The safety data advises against concentrated bamboo forms during pregnancy. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information — avoid concentrated extracts unless your doctor clears it.

In rare cases, direct contact with bamboo shoots has caused skin irritation in some people.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Bamboo extract is worth discussing with your doctor if you're interested in it and don't take antithyroid medications. If you do take those drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — long-term use could affect how well they work.

Because supplement safety isn't well established, avoid it during pregnancy, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're breastfeeding.

Antithyroid Drugs

Theoretically, long-term bamboo use might increase the effects and adverse effects of antithyroid drugs, possibly leading to hypothyroidism.
Animal research suggests that long-term consumption of bamboo shoot can decrease thyroid peroxidase activity, as well as levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Does Bamboo Extract by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bamboo Extract has a known interaction with 5 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bamboo Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
The safety data advises against concentrated bamboo forms during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
Is it safe while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety information on bamboo supplements while breastfeeding. Avoid concentrated extracts unless your doctor clears it first.
Does bamboo extract actually help prevent cavities?

Is this the same as eating bamboo shoots?
No — properly cooked bamboo shoots are widely eaten, but this is a concentrated supplement form, and supplement safety isn't as well studied. The extraction process makes it different from food.
