Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapple. The tablet also includes inactive ingredients — maltodextrin, vegetable cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, croscarmellose sodium, and less than 2% of other materials that help hold it together and make it easy to swallow.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Bromelain's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: reduce pain, swelling, stiffness in inflamed joints.
  • We looked for evidence on: Knee pain, Osteoarthritis, Sprains, Tendinopathy, Postoperative pain, Postoperative swelling — and 3 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Bromelain is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle soreness (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bromelain is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Osteoarthritis, Knee pain, Sprains, Postoperative swelling, and more.

The evidence on bromelain for most conditions is not established in the data we hold. It's been studied for hay fever, burns, cancer support, chemotherapy side effects, chronic venous insufficiency, and diabetes, but in each case the available research is insufficient to rate whether it works.

If you're considering bromelain for a specific health reason, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current evidence actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bromelain is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in the short term, though long-term safety data is limited. Common side effects include diarrhea, flatulence, stomach upset, and headache.

Some people may experience allergic reactions — including swelling, hives, or itching — and if you inhale bromelain dust (occupational exposure), it can trigger asthma-like symptoms and throat or eye irritation. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy, and there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so avoid it then.

If you're pregnant or nursing and interested in bromelain, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bromelain.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 141 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel) — bromelain may increase bleeding risk. Also flag any tetracycline antibiotics you're taking.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Bromelain might appeal to you if you're exploring natural enzyme supplements, but the evidence for most uses isn't clear. The main caution is with blood thinners and certain antibiotics — if you take either, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

It's not safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Your own healthcare provider can help you decide if this fits your situation.

Formula

Bromelain is an proteolytic enzyme that is derived from the stem of pineapples. When taken in between meals, the anti-inflammatory properties of Bromelain may help reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness in joints caused by inflammation. It may also help to reduce swollen sinuses, providing relief to people who have sinus infections. When taken with meals, Bromelain promotes digestive health by helping the body to digest proteins and absorb nutrients faster.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Bromelain may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
There is one case report of a patient experiencing minor bruising while taking bromelain with naproxen. Bromelain is thought to have antiplatelet activity. Whether this interaction is of concern with topical bromelain is unclear. Interference with coagulation of burn wounds has been reported in a patient receiving bromelain-based enzymatic debridement. However, observational research has found that topical bromelain debridement is not associated with increases or decreases in laboratory markers of coagulation when compared with surgical debridement.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Tetracycline Antibiotics

Theoretically, bromelain might increase levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Laboratory research suggests that bromelain might increase the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. However, a study in healthy adults reported no difference in tetracycline plasma levels when a 500 mg dose was taken with or without bromelain 80 mg.
