Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wild harvested Buchu extract in a liquid, non-alcoholic form. Buchu is a plant traditionally used for urinary and kidney support.
The liquid also includes vegetable palm glycerin and Hawaiian artesian water as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We hold no effectiveness data for Buchu in our files. The evidence for what this plant does—or doesn't do—isn't established in the information we have on hand.
If you're considering it for a specific reason, that's a good question to bring to your pharmacist.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Buchu is generally used in food amounts, but when taken as a medicine at higher doses, strong safety data is lacking and the essential oil can be irritating. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because buchu is traditionally thought to affect the uterus.
For breastfeeding, there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check this product against any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs you take (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and others), lithium for mood disorders, and any medications known to stress the liver. All three categories carry a Moderate interaction risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Buchu extract may appeal to people interested in herbal kidney and urinary support, but it's not the right fit if you take blood thinners, lithium, or liver-stressing medications. Pregnant people should avoid it.

Buchu Non-Alcohol by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Buchu Non-Alcohol by Hawaii Pharm does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concern involves drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs).
Buchu contains pulegone, a compound known to be toxic to the liver. When you take buchu alongside medications that already challenge your liver—such as acarbose (used for blood sugar) or amiodarone (a heart rhythm drug)—there's a theoretical risk of increased liver damage, especially at higher doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The product may also have antiplatelet effects (it may thin your blood slightly). If you're on blood thinners like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), enoxaparin (Lovenox), or heparin, buchu could boost their effect and raise your bleeding risk.
Additionally, buchu is thought to act as a diuretic (water pill). If you take lithium for mood disorders, buchu might reduce how your body clears it, potentially raising lithium levels to unsafe amounts and requiring a dose adjustment.
Altogether, these interactions span 482 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below with your exact prescriptions before starting this product.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Buchu may have antiplatelet effects. Theoretically, buchu may enhance the effects of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs and increase the risk of bleeding in some patients. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Buchu contains pulegone, a known hepatotoxin. There is some concern that buchu may adversely affect the liver, especially when the leaf is used in large doses or the oil is ingested. Theoretically, concomitant use with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (Tricor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo)
Lithium
Buchu is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically, buchu might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
