Butcher’s Broom Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Butcher’s Broom against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Butcher’s Broom by Earthborn Elements
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Ruscus aculeatus, commonly called butcher's broom, a plant extract traditionally used for circulatory and vascular support. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, an inactive ingredient that holds the herb inside.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Butcher's broom is possibly effective for chronic venous insufficiency — a condition where veins in the legs have trouble returning blood to your heart, causing swelling and discomfort. For other conditions the product may be marketed for — diabetic eye damage, hemorrhoids, dizziness upon standing, and lymphedema — there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Short-term, butcher's broom is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but we don't have solid long-term safety data. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are digestive upset: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, indigestion, and inflammation of the stomach lining.
One case report documented severe vomiting and diarrhea that led to hospitalization with dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take alpha-blockers (like doxazosin, terazosin, or tamsulosin for blood pressure or enlarged prostate) or alpha-agonists (like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine in decongestants, or clonidine for blood pressure). Both interactions are Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Butcher's broom may help with chronic venous insufficiency symptoms if you don't take blood pressure or decongestant medications. If you're on any alpha-blockers or alpha-agonists, check with your pharmacist first — this product could interfere with how they work.

Butcher’s Broom by Earthborn Elements Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Butcher's Broom by Earthborn Elements interacts with two major drug classes.
Its active ingredient, Ruscus aculeatus, has alpha-adrenergic agonist effects — meaning it can mimic how certain blood pressure and decongestant medications work in your body.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take alpha-blockers (drugs that lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, like doxazosin or tamsulosin), butcher's broom may reduce how well they work. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
On the flip side, if you take alpha-agonists (decongestants and some blood pressure drugs like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine), butcher's broom could amplify their effects and side effects — also Moderate severity.
Although animal and lab studies show these effects, human studies confirming the interaction are limited. Still, it's important to check your exact medications with the tool below before you start.
