Catnip Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Hawaii Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Catnip against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 1 active ingredient: certified organic catnip extract in a liquid form. Catnip is a plant from the mint family with a long history of traditional use.
The liquid is made with vegetable palm glycerin, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for catnip's effectiveness is currently insufficient. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its use for anxiety, tension headache, upper respiratory tract infection, upset stomach (dyspepsia), gas (flatulence), or absent or abnormal menstrual periods (amenorrhea).
If you're considering catnip for any of these, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports it for your particular situation.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Catnip is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in typical amounts, though human safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are headache, feeling unwell (malaise), and vomiting.
Taking too much can cause stomach pain and vomiting; one case report described a toddler who became lethargic and unresponsive after ingesting large amounts in catnip tea. Catnip should be avoided during pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus and safety hasn't been established.
Because overall safety information is limited, caution is warranted.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium (a risk of raised levels) or any CNS depressants — sedating medications, sleep aids, anxiety drugs, opioids, or over-the-counter sleep or allergy products.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Catnip extract may interest you if you're exploring traditional herbal options, but the evidence for what it actually does isn't well established. If you take lithium or any sedating medications, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding — this isn't the right choice. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.

Catnip by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm Catnip extract does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with lithium, a mood stabilizer used for bipolar disorder. Catnip may reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising its levels to unsafe amounts — your doctor would need to monitor levels and possibly adjust your dose if you're taking both.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Catnip also has sedative properties that can add to the effect of CNS depressants (sedating drugs) — things like sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids, and antihistamines. Using them together could make you drowsier or more impaired than either alone.
Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications. If you take lithium, any prescription sedating medication, or over-the-counter sleep or anxiety products, run your specific drugs through the checker below before starting this supplement.
Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether it's safe to combine.
