HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Catnip & Fennel Combination by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients: fennel glycerite liquid extract and catnip glycerite liquid extract. Fennel is traditionally used as a digestive aid and has been studied for menstrual cramping; catnip is an herbal preparation with a long history in folk medicine for relaxation and digestive comfort.
The extract form is delivered in glycerin, an inactive ingredient that serves as the liquid base.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For fennel, the evidence supports it as possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramping). The data we hold show insufficient reliable evidence for fennel's use in bronchitis, anxiety, nocturnal bedwetting, or cholera.
For catnip, the evidence we hold is insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of the conditions we have data on — amenorrhea, anxiety, tension headache, upper respiratory infections, indigestion, or gas. If you're considering this product for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Fennel is generally well tolerated when used as food, though concentrated supplements and essential oils warrant more caution. The most common side effects reported with fennel are gastrointestinal discomfort, sun sensitivity, and allergic reactions in sensitive people; rarely, seizures have been reported.
Catnip is generally well tolerated in tea amounts, but human safety data are limited. Common side effects include headache, feeling unwell (malaise), and vomiting; large amounts may cause stomach upset.
Importantly, the safety notes advise against fennel in medicinal or concentrated amounts during pregnancy due to limited data and possible hormone-like effects, and catnip should be avoided during pregnancy as it may stimulate the uterus and safety is not established. For breastfeeding, food amounts of fennel are likely fine, but medicinal doses and essential oil are not well studied; catnip has insufficient safety information for breastfeeding and should be avoided.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check whether you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate), birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy (Moderate), the antibiotic ciprofloxacin or Cipro (Moderate), tamoxifen for breast cancer (Moderate), sedative or anti-anxiety medications (Moderate), or lithium (Moderate). These are the medication types we have documented interactions for in this product's ingredients.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're on a blood thinner, take a birth control pill or hormone therapy, use sedative medications, or take lithium or ciprofloxacin, you need to check with your pharmacist before trying this product. Fennel and catnip are generally well tolerated in small amounts, but this is a concentrated herbal supplement and not appropriate during pregnancy.

Catnip & Fennel Combination by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
TerraVita's Catnip & Fennel Combination does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concerns involve blood thinners.
Fennel may increase bleeding risk when used alongside antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs (blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin) — animal research suggests fennel has antiplatelet effects, and this severity is rated Moderate.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Fennel also has documented Moderate interactions with contraceptive drugs, hormone replacement therapy, and tamoxifen (a breast cancer medication), because some of fennel's components have estrogen-like activity that could interfere with how these drugs work. Additionally, fennel may raise levels of drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, and it may reduce how well the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cipro) works — the latter possibly due to minerals in fennel that bind to the drug.
Catnip carries a Moderate interaction with drugs that slow the central nervous system (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications), as catnip itself has sedative properties and could add to their effects. It may also affect lithium levels, a medication used for mood disorders, by reducing how your kidneys clear it from your body.
Altogether, these interactions span 884 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions using the tool on this page before you start.
