Chaparral is regarded as unsafe for oral use. The safety data shows it can cause serious liver damage — including hepatotoxicity, cirrhosis, liver failure, and in some cases liver transplant has been necessary.
It can also harm the kidneys. Symptoms of liver damage include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain on the right side, dark urine, light stools, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, and loss of appetite.
Additionally, it may cause contact dermatitis if applied to skin. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety rating is Likely Unsafe.
