Chlorella Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Solgar
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorella against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella by Solgar
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella powder, a freshwater algae. That's it — no blends or multiple herbs here.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, with microcrystalline cellulose and vegetable magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients (standard binders and flow agents).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency based on the data we hold. For other uses listed — brain tumors, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue — the evidence is insufficient to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means we don't have reliable evidence one way or the other yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated short-term, but quality and purity vary widely between products, so sourcing matters. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, skin sensitivity to sun (photosensitivity), and discolored stools — especially in the first two weeks.
In trials, these were uncommon: one person out of 42 reported nausea, one reported diarrhea, and in another trial 4 of 13 people had worsening constipation or mild diarrhea. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported.
For pregnancy, chlorella is rated possibly safe. Safety data for breastfeeding is not on file.
Because long-term safety hasn't been established, avoid chlorella unless your doctor directs you to use it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you're on warfarin (or other blood thinners that work similarly) — chlorella's vitamin K can reduce its effect. Also flag any medications that increase skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitizing drugs), since chlorella may make that worse.
Run your exact medications through the checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're pregnant with iron deficiency and your doctor recommends it. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, talk with your pharmacist before starting — the interactions are real.
Most people tolerate it well short-term, but quality varies, so choose a trusted brand. Since we don't have solid long-term safety data, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Chlorella by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Chlorella is a single-ingredient supplement that does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K, which can reduce warfarin's effectiveness — there's at least one case report of this happening when someone started chlorella supplements.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight). Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization in a small number of people, showing up as swelling and rash-like lesions on sun-exposed skin.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Before you start chlorella, use the interaction checker below with your exact medications — especially if you take warfarin or any drug that increases sun sensitivity.

Chlorella powder
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
