Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Chokeberry product and its label doesn't state a use — see Chokeberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold for chokeberry is limited. For cardiovascular disease, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — meaning studies haven't shown it works for that purpose.

For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, athletic performance, and cancer, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works or doesn't. If you're considering this for one of those reasons, talk with your pharmacist about what the research actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chokeberry is generally well tolerated when eaten as a food, but safety data for concentrated supplements like this powder is sparse — so use caution. The most common side effects reported in studies were constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

In one small study, about 14% of people drinking 100 mL of chokeberry juice daily had constipation or digestive issues; in another, about 53% reported diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, or vomiting when drinking the juice twice daily for 6 weeks. We don't have pregnancy or lactation safety data on file for this ingredient, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or breastfeeding and considering this product.

Chokeberry Extract, Powder4 drug types · 811 drugs

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical and in vitro research suggests that chokeberry extract can temporarily inhibit platelet aggregation and decrease clot formation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that chokeberry decreases levels of blood glucose in some patients with diabetes. However, other clinical research suggests that chokeberry has no significant effect on blood glucose levels.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Trabectedin (Yondelis)

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the effects and adverse effects of trabectedin.
In one case report, a patient drinking chokeberry juice developed rhabdomyolysis induced by trabectedin, a cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrate. It is possible that inhibition of CYP3A4 by chokeberry juice might have inhibited the metabolism of trabectedin and increased trabectedin levels in this patient.

Chokeberry 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Chokeberry 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chokeberry 4:1 Extract Powder has a known interaction with 811 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chokeberry 4:1 Extract Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my heart health?
The evidence we hold says it's possibly ineffective for cardiovascular disease. That means research hasn't shown it works for that purpose — so if heart health is why you're considering it, there's better-studied options to talk about with your doctor.
What are the most common side effects?
Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting are the most common. In studies, roughly 14–53% of people drinking chokeberry juice reported digestive issues, depending on the dose and duration. Concentrated powder might behave differently than juice, but we don't have specific data on that.
Is it safe if I'm breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for chokeberry during breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're nursing — they can help you decide based on your individual situation.
Does this product have fillers or other ingredients?
No — this product lists only chokeberry extract powder. There are no inactive ingredients like fillers or binders listed.
Can I take this if I'm on a blood thinner?
Not without checking first. Chokeberry can thin your blood slightly, so combining it with a blood thinner like warfarin or clopidogrel raises your bleeding risk. Use the medication checker on this page and talk with your pharmacist about your specific drug before starting.
