HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Choline DL-Bitartrate 600 mg by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: choline DL-bitartrate, a form of choline — an essential nutrient your body uses to build cell membranes and produce acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter for brain and nerve function. The capsule itself is made from hypromellose, an inert plant-based shell.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for choline supplements is mixed. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.
For Alzheimer's disease, age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, bronchitis, and a liver complication called TPN-associated hepatic steatosis, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works. Talk to your doctor about whether choline supplementation makes sense for what you're hoping to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Choline is well tolerated when you take reasonable doses — 600 mg, as in this product, is generally safe. However, high doses carry side effects.
Beyond the tolerable upper limit of 3.5 grams daily, choline can cause fishy body odor (from how your gut metabolizes it), and at doses of 9 grams or more, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sweating. During pregnancy, choline is important, but use only the dose your doctor advises — the same goes while breastfeeding, when your choline needs are higher.
Work with your healthcare provider on the right amount for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take atropine or any other anticholinergic medication (drugs that block acetylcholine's effects), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement — choline may reduce how well the medication works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
At 600 mg per dose, this choline supplement is in the range most people tolerate well and is not expected to cause the high-dose side effects reported in research. If you take atropine or anticholinergic medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this to your routine.
