What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: choline L-bitartrate, a form of choline (an essential nutrient your body uses to build cell membranes and produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for brain and muscle function). Each serving delivers 600 mg of choline L-bitartrate.
Silica is included as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for choline L-bitartrate is mixed and often incomplete. For athletic performance, it appears to be possibly ineffective.
For bronchitis, age-related cognitive decline, liver problems related to parenteral nutrition (TPN-associated hepatic steatosis), allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and Alzheimer disease, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate how well it works. If you're considering this supplement for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Choline is generally well tolerated when you take appropriate amounts. However, high doses — especially beyond the daily upper limit of 3.5 grams — can cause side effects.
At doses of 9 grams daily or higher, you may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, salivation, sweating, and a fishy body odor (from intestinal breakdown of choline). Even higher doses (32 grams daily) have caused gastroenteritis.
Choline is important during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use prenatal vitamins or supplement doses only as your doctor advises. The safety data rates choline as likely safe in pregnancy and lactation when used appropriately — don't self-dose without guidance.
