Chondroitin Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chondroitin against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chondroitin sulfate, a compound naturally found in cartilage that's commonly used for joint health. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, gelatin, water, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chondroitin is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for cataracts and osteoarthritis, meaning there's some evidence it may help, but the data isn't conclusive.
For aging skin, osteoporosis, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and colorectal adenoma prevention, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chondroitin sulfate is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though quality varies between brands. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are digestive — abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.
Rare but serious liver damage (hepatotoxicity) has been reported. Some people have also reported skin symptoms like swelling around the eyes, rashes, hair loss, and water retention, especially in combinations with glucosamine.
A very rare case of asthma worsening and one case of sun sensitivity have been documented. There isn't enough safety information to use this during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before considering it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinner, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — chondroitin may increase its blood-thinning effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chondroitin may be worth trying if you have osteoarthritis or cataracts and want to explore a possibly effective option, but the benefit is uncertain and quality varies. If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Digestive upset is common, and there's not enough data to recommend it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Chondroitin by Nature's Sunshine Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chondroitin by Nature's Sunshine has documented interactions with blood thinners.
The main concern is warfarin (Coumadin). Chondroitin may increase warfarin's blood-thinning effects — especially if you're taking it alongside glucosamine — which can raise your INR (a measure of how thin your blood is).
The effect of chondroitin alone is less clear than the combination, but it's worth flagging.

Altoghether, these interactions span 2 individual medications. If you take warfarin or any other blood thinner, check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting chondroitin, and let your doctor or pharmacist know you're considering it.

Chondroitin Sulfate
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Taking chondroitin in combination with glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, the effect of chondroitin alone is unclear.
There have been multiple reports of increased international normalized ratio (INR) in patients taking warfarin with glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. The lack of reports with chondroitin alone seem to suggest that the interactions occurring in these reports may have been due to glucosamine. In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in INR in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone, without chondroitin, to increased INR in patients taking warfarin.
