Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Chondroitin Sulfate is the single active ingredient in this powder. It's a naturally occurring compound found in cartilage — the cushioning tissue in your joints — and is sometimes used to support joint and eye health.

There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Chondroitin Sulfate's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Chondroitin Sulfate for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Cataracts — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Osteoarthritis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for chondroitin is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for osteoarthritis (joint wear-and-tear) and cataracts.

For aging skin, osteoporosis (weakened bones), high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and colorectal adenoma, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate it reliably. If you're considering it for joint or eye issues, talk it over with your doctor to see if the current evidence fits your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chondroitin is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though quality varies between products. The most common side effects taken by mouth are stomach pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Rare reports include liver damage, skin symptoms (eyelid swelling, leg swelling, hair loss, rash), and in one case, asthma flare-up. When combined with glucosamine, skin reactions like hives and water retention around the eyes have been reported.

There isn't enough safety information to recommend chondroitin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, trying to conceive, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chondroitin Sulfate.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 2 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinner, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product. Chondroitin may increase how much your blood thinner works, which could affect your INR or bleeding risk.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chondroitin may help with osteoarthritis or cataracts, though evidence is modest. It's generally well tolerated for short-term use, but if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, you'll need to check with your doctor first because of a possible interaction.

Quality varies between brands, and long-term safety isn't fully established — talk with your healthcare provider about whether it's right for your situation.

Warfarin (Coumadin)

Taking chondroitin in combination with glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, the effect of chondroitin alone is unclear.
There have been multiple reports of increased international normalized ratio (INR) in patients taking warfarin with glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. The lack of reports with chondroitin alone seem to suggest that the interactions occurring in these reports may have been due to glucosamine. In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in INR in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone, without chondroitin, to increased INR in patients taking warfarin.

Chondroitin Sulfate by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Chondroitin Sulfate by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chondroitin Sulfate has a known interaction with 2 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chondroitin Sulfate contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is chondroitin, and what's it supposed to do?
Chondroitin is a substance found naturally in cartilage, the tissue that cushions your joints. It's used for joint health in osteoarthritis and may also support eye health in cataracts. Evidence for both uses is modest — it's rated possibly effective — so it's not a guaranteed fix.
What are the side effects?
Most commonly, people report stomach pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, or nausea. Skin reactions like rashes, eyelid or leg swelling, and hair loss have also been reported. Serious effects are rare but include liver damage and, in one case, asthma flare-up.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to know. The facts advise against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice based on your situation.
Is this product just chondroitin, or does it have fillers?
This is pure chondroitin powder with no other inactive ingredients listed.
Why is there a warning about warfarin?
Chondroitin, especially when combined with glucosamine, may boost the blood-thinning effect of warfarin. This can raise your INR (blood-clotting measure) and increase bleeding risk. If you're on warfarin, your doctor needs to know before you start chondroitin.
How long can I safely take this?
The data shows chondroitin is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but long-term safety isn't fully established, and quality varies between products. Check with your doctor about how long is right for you.
