HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Cinnamon with High-Potency Chromium by Puritan's Pride
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This capsule contains three active ingredients: chromium, cinnamon, and cinnamon bark extract. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and insulin function.
Both the whole cinnamon and its concentrated bark extract are forms of cassia cinnamon, included for their potential effects on glucose metabolism and other metabolic markers. The product also contains four inactive ingredients — gelatin, cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate — which are standard capsule materials and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for these ingredients is mixed. Chromium is rated Likely Effective for chromium deficiency and Possibly Effective for type 2 diabetes, especially when blood sugar control is poor.
For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), cinnamon, and chromium are both rated Possibly Ineffective. Neither ingredient has established effectiveness for conditions like schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
The safety data we hold does not provide an effectiveness rating for cinnamon or cinnamon bark extract for any specific condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, but high or long-term use may pose risks. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects include kidney and liver damage and blood cell disorders — one case report described anemia and blood clotting problems in a patient taking high-dose chromium for several months. Skin rashes and contact dermatitis have also been reported.
Cinnamon is generally safe at food amounts but carries concerns at high supplement doses because it contains coumarin, a compound that can harm the liver with very high intakes over time. In clinical trials, doses of 360 mg to 12 grams daily for 3 months did not significantly raise liver enzymes, but there is still caution advised for extended high-dose use.
A small number of trial participants reported rash or, rarely, low blood sugar episodes. Both cinnamon ingredients are rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation, though medicinal or high-dose supplement amounts are best avoided during pregnancy due to limited safety data.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this product if you use antidiabetes drugs or insulin (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or other thyroid hormone replacements (Moderate risk of reduced absorption), hepatotoxic drugs — medications that stress the liver (Moderate risk), or NSAIDs and aspirin (Minor risk of increased chromium levels).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help support blood sugar control if you have chromium deficiency or type 2 diabetes, but the evidence for other uses is weak or absent. Cinnamon with High-Potency Chromium by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Cinnamon with High-Potency Chromium by Puritan's Pride does interact with several medication types.
Chromium is the primary concern — it may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs) or insulin, since chromium can lower blood glucose and boost insulin sensitivity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Both the cinnamon and cinnamon bark extract in this product may also lower blood sugar and have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs, potentially requiring dose adjustments. Additionally, chromium might bind to thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine/Synthroid), reducing how much your body absorbs — research shows a 17% drop in blood levels when taken together.
Chromium may also interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen, and aspirin, by increasing chromium absorption and blood levels (though these are rated Minor interactions).
Both cinnamon ingredients carry a Moderate risk with hepatotoxic drugs — medications that can stress the liver — because cinnamon contains coumarin, a compound that may cause liver damage at high doses or with long-term use. Altogether, these interactions span 506 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Cinnamon with High-Potency Chromium with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Cinnamon
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
