Citicoline Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by AOR Advanced Orthomolecular Research
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Citicoline against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Citicoline by AOR Advanced Orthomolecular Research is a 3-ingredient capsule. Two of the active ingredients are forms of choline: choline bitartrate and choline itself, which your body uses to support cell membranes and brain function.
The third active ingredient is Xerenoos, which is citicoline, a compound that combines choline with cytidine and may support cognitive and eye health. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, sodium stearyl fumarate, and hypromellose — that help form and deliver the active ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The choline in this product is rated possibly ineffective for athletic performance; evidence is insufficient to rate it for bronchitis, age-related cognitive decline, liver health during parenteral nutrition (TPN-associated steatosis), hay fever, or Alzheimer disease. The citicoline (Xerenoos) is rated possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and glaucoma, but possibly ineffective for stroke recovery.
Evidence is insufficient to rate it for Alzheimer disease, traumatic brain injury, or cardiac arrest. In short, there's some promising data for cognitive aging and eye pressure, but evidence is limited for most other uses we have on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The choline in this product is generally well tolerated when used at appropriate doses, though high-dose supplements can cause side effects and have a daily upper limit of 3.5 grams. At very high doses (9 grams or more daily), choline may cause diarrhea, nausea, sweating, and vomiting, and a fishy body odor can occur due to how your body breaks it down.
Citicoline (Xerenoos) is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. Common side effects from citicoline in studies include abdominal pain, back pain, headache, insomnia, nausea, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, and rash — each reported in a small number of trial participants.
Choline is rated likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though your doctor should guide any supplemental use; however, there isn't enough safety data for citicoline during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it at those times.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take atropine — this product's choline may decrease its effects in the brain. The product's citicoline ingredient has no documented interactions in our data for the medications we checked.
Use the medication search tool on this page to verify your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you're interested in cognitive aging or eye health support, since citicoline shows some promise there. If you take atropine, have pregnancy or breastfeeding plans, or use any regular medications, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
They can check your specific situation and let you know whether Citicoline is a fit for you.

Choline Bitartrate
Atropine
Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.
