What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid extract contains one active ingredient: Codonopsis Root Glycerite Liquid Extract. The product also includes glycerin and chocolate flavor as inactive ingredients to improve taste and texture.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate codonopsis for asthma, cancer, respiratory tract infections, indigestion, or high cholesterol. That doesn't mean it doesn't work for these uses—it means the evidence we have isn't strong enough yet to say whether it does.
If you're considering this product for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Codonopsis is generally well tolerated in traditional food-like amounts, though high-quality safety data are limited. At very high doses (30–60 grams), it may cause chest pain, irregular heartbeat, throat pain, or loss of voice.
Allergic reactions are possible, including in rare cases anaphylaxis and hives; one case report documented anaphylaxis in an 18-year-old after ingesting codonopsis root. The safety data advise against using this product during pregnancy.
Safety while breastfeeding is not established, so avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), abiraterone (Zytiga) for prostate cancer, or diabetes medications. Codonopsis may increase bleeding risk, reduce abiraterone effectiveness, or lower your blood sugar.
These are Moderate-severity interactions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Codonopsis Root Chocolate Flavor is traditionally used but lacks strong modern evidence for most claimed benefits. It's best avoided if you take blood thinners, abiraterone, or diabetes medications without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.
Don't use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider says otherwise. If you have questions about whether it's right for you and your medications, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Codonopsis Root Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Codonopsis Root Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents). Codonopsis may increase bleeding risk when combined with these medications.
A small clinical study in people with heart disease showed that codonopsis liquor reduced platelet clumping over 4 weeks, though it didn't affect other clotting factors.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Codonopsis may also interact with abiraterone (Zytiga), a prostate cancer drug. Animal research suggests codonopsis could speed up how your body clears abiraterone, potentially reducing its effectiveness.
Additionally, codonopsis might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken with diabetes medications, since laboratory and animal studies indicate it has blood-sugar-lowering effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications. Before you start this product, run a list of your current prescriptions—especially blood thinners, abiraterone, or diabetes drugs—through the interaction checker on this page or discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Codonopsis Root Chocolate Flavor with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Codonopsis Root Glycerite Liquid Extract
Abiraterone (Zytiga)
Theoretically, taking codonopsis root with abiraterone might reduce the levels and therapeutic effects of abiraterone.
Animal research in rats shows that intragastric administration of codonopsis root along with abiraterone every 2 days for 2 weeks seems to increase the clearance of abiraterone and reduce the overall exposure and time to maximum concentration. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, codonopsis liquor might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
A small clinical study in adults with coronary heart disease shows that consuming Codonopsis pilosula liquor for 4 weeks inhibits platelet aggregation but does not affect tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) or plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI).
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, codonopsis might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory and animal research suggest that codonopsis has antidiabetic effects.
