Coleus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Coleus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a certified organic coleus dried root liquid extract. Coleus is a plant whose root has been used traditionally and studied for potential effects on circulation and inflammation.
The extract is suspended in a liquid menstruum (a plant-based carrier), which is an inactive ingredient that helps deliver the active compound.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that coleus is effective for any of the conditions listed — angina (chest pain from poor heart blood flow), asthma, cancer, congestive heart failure, eczema, or dry eye. All six uses show insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean coleus has no effect; it means the data strong enough to make a confident claim isn't available in our sources. If you're considering this for a specific condition, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Coleus is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though it can cause gastrointestinal side effects. A small number of trial participants reported diarrhea, constipation, nausea, or vomiting; some retrospective reports suggest about 1 in 10 people experience digestive upset, with diarrhea being the most common.
The product carries a caution that it may lower blood pressure and isn't well studied for long-term use, so professional guidance is wise. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you start, check with your pharmacist if you take nitrates or calcium channel blockers (both Major severity) — coleus may strengthen their heart effects dangerously. Blood pressure medications, drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 or CYP3A4, blood thinners (anticoagulants), antiplatelet drugs, or warfarin all carry Moderate-severity concerns.
The medication search tool on this page will help you confirm your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Coleus may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional herbal support and don't take heart medications, blood pressure drugs, blood thinners, or drugs processed through the CYP2C9 or CYP3A4 enzyme systems — which covers a lot of common prescriptions. If you're on any regular medication, especially for the heart or circulation, check with your pharmacist before adding this.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Skip it until you've talked to your doctor.

Coleus by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Coleus extract contains a single active ingredient — coleus root — that interacts with several important medication types.
The most serious concerns are with nitrates and calcium channel blockers (both used for heart conditions), where coleus may theoretically increase their coronary blood-vessel-widening effects beyond what's intended, raising the risk of unwanted drops in heart function or blood pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Coleus also has documented interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), where it may cause an additive drop in blood pressure. It affects how your liver processes two major enzyme systems (CYP2C9 and CYP3A4), which means it could change the levels or effectiveness of many common drugs metabolized by these pathways.
Additionally, coleus may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, and there's conflicting evidence on how it affects warfarin metabolism specifically, making that combination particularly tricky.
Altogether, these interactions span 904 individual medications. We've checked this ingredient thoroughly, and the data we hold shows no interaction-free drug categories.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before starting.

Calcium Channel Blockers
Theoretically, combining coleus with calcium channel blockers might increase the coronary vasodilatory effects.
Forskolin, a constituent of coleus, and calcium channel blockers both cause coronary vasodilatory effects.
Nitrates
Theoretically, combining coleus with nitrates might increase the coronary vasodilatory effects.
Forskolin, a constituent of coleus, and nitrates both cause coronary vasodilatory effects.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of coleus and anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that forskolin, a constituent of coleus, can inhibit platelet aggregation and adhesion.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining coleus with antihypertensive drugs might cause additive blood pressure lowering effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that forskolin, a constituent of coleus, may lower blood pressure.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, taking coleus may affect drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 and increase the risk of adverse effects or reduce the effectiveness.
Research on the effect of coleus on CYP2C9 is conflicting. Some animal research shows that coleus extract can induce CYP2C9, while in vitro research shows that coleus can inhibit CYP2C9. Until more is known, advise patients that taking coleus might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, taking coleus might decrease serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that coleus can activate the nuclear receptor, pregnane X receptor (PXR), which results in increased expression of CYP3A4. Although the clinical significance of this is not known, use caution when considering concomitant use of coleus and other drugs affected by these enzymes.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, taking coleus may affect the metabolism of warfarin and increase the risk of adverse effects or reduce the effectiveness.
Some animal research shows that coleus extract can induce cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9), an enzyme that metabolizes warfarin. However, other in vitro research shows that coleus can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking coleus with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might affect drug levels and the risk of adverse effects. Until more is known, advise patients that taking coleus might increase or decrease levels of warfarin.
