Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

SurThrival Colostrum is a single-ingredient product: bovine colostrum, the nutrient-rich fluid that comes from a cow's mammary gland in the first few days after birth. The capsule itself is made from gelatin.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: immunity and digestive function support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Chemotherapy-related infection, Child growth, Critical illness (trauma), Exercise-induced respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Bovine Colostrum is rated "Possibly Effective" for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bovine Colostrum is rated "Possibly Effective" for Exercise-induced respiratory infections.
  • Also on file: Bovine Colostrum is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

The evidence for bovine colostrum is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea and rotaviral diarrhea, and possibly effective for exercise-induced respiratory infections.

For necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious intestinal condition in newborns), the data suggests it's possibly ineffective. The evidence we have on file does not establish whether it works for other uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bovine colostrum is generally well tolerated in most adults. A small number of people in clinical trials reported mild bloating, nausea, diarrhea, and unsettled stomach — at about the same rate as those taking a whey-based control.

One person with HIV-related cryptosporidiosis experienced nausea and vomiting. Elevated liver function tests and decreased blood cell counts (hematocrit) have been reported in HIV patients being treated for infectious diarrhea, though it's unclear whether colostrum itself caused these changes.

There isn't enough safety data to know how it affects pregnancy, and safety during breastfeeding has not been well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before using it in either situation. If you have a milk or dairy allergy, avoid this product.
