By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Goldthread product and its label doesn't state a use — see Goldthread's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We hold no effectiveness data for Coptis chinensis extract in our monographs. The facts don't establish what this supplement is intended to do or how well it does it.

Safety Information · database check
Some gaps

Safety data exists for these ingredients, but with some important gaps.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 0 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Human safety data for goldthread are limited, and quality can vary from one product to another, so use short-term only and with caution. More importantly, berberine—the active compound in this extract—is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

It can harm the fetus or newborn and passes into breast milk, so goldthread should be avoided entirely if you're pregnant or nursing.

Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)

Berberine, a constituent of goldthread, can reduce metabolism of cyclosporine and increase serum levels. It might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which metabolizes cyclosporine.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Coptis Chinensis Extract by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Coptis Chinensis Extract by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Coptis Chinensis Extract has a known interaction with 643 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Coptis Chinensis Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data rate berberine, the active ingredient in goldthread, as likely unsafe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. It can harm the developing fetus and passes into breast milk. Avoid this supplement entirely if you're pregnant or nursing.
Does this interact with cyclosporine?
Yes. Berberine in this extract can slow your body's metabolism of cyclosporine, raising its blood levels. This is a moderate-severity interaction. If you take cyclosporine (Neoral or Sandimmune) for transplant, talk with your pharmacist before starting this supplement.
What is berberine and why does it matter for drug interactions?
Berberine is the main active compound in goldthread. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down many medications. Berberine can slow that enzyme, which means drugs it processes—like cyclosporine and some cholesterol medications—may stay in your body longer and build up to higher levels.
Is this product safe?
Human safety data are limited, and quality varies between products. It's tolerated short-term by some adults with caution. But if you take any prescription medication, especially those metabolized by CYP3A4, you need to check with your pharmacist first.
What is goldthread used for?
We don't have data on file about what this supplement is intended to treat or how effective it is. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it's right for your health goals.
