Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for Verzenio (abemaciclib). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down and clear it. Berberine, the bright yellow compound in goldthread, may gently slow that same enzyme. If it does, abemaciclib could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which can mean stronger side effects like diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, low blood counts, or in rare cases liver or clotting problems.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this is theoretical, based on lab pharmacology, and hasn't actually been seen in people. Still, since abemaciclib is a cancer drug with real risks, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before pairing goldthread or berberine with it.

About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
