What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

Ecklonia Cava: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

Ecklonia cava is an edible brown seaweed rich in plant compounds called phlorotannins that are studied as antioxidants. Early human and lab research hints at possible benefits for blood vessels, blood sugar, and inflammation, but the evidence is limited and far from proven. Because it contains iodine and has not been well studied for long-term safety, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Overview

Ecklonia cava is a type of edible brown seaweed (a kind of marine algae) that grows in coastal waters around Japan, Korea, and China. It has long been part of traditional diets in East Asia, where seaweeds are eaten as food.

In supplement form, Ecklonia cava is usually sold as an extract in capsules, tablets, or powders. It is marketed mainly for its phlorotannins, which are natural plant compounds with antioxidant activity. People take it hoping to support heart health, blood sugar, and general wellness, but most of these uses are still being studied.

How it works

Ecklonia cava is rich in phlorotannins, a group of polyphenol compounds found in brown seaweeds. Well-known examples include dieckol and eckol. These compounds act as antioxidants, meaning they may help neutralize unstable molecules called free radicals in laboratory tests.

Researchers think these compounds may also affect inflammation, blood vessel function, and enzymes involved in blood sugar and fat metabolism. However, most of this work comes from test-tube and animal studies, so it is not clear how well these effects translate to people taking a supplement.

Safety & precautions

Ecklonia cava has been used in some short-term studies without major reported problems, but its long-term safety is not well established. Like other seaweeds, it can contain iodine, and too much iodine can affect thyroid function. People with thyroid conditions should be especially cautious.

People with seafood or seaweed allergies, those with kidney disease, or anyone managing a chronic condition should check with a healthcare provider first. Because supplement quality and contaminant levels (such as heavy metals) can vary, choose products from reputable companies that test their products.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough safety information, and the iodine content of seaweed is a concern, so Ecklonia cava is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Side effects

Reported side effects are usually mild and may include digestive upset such as stomach discomfort, nausea, or loose stools. Because of the iodine in seaweed, frequent or high use could affect the thyroid in sensitive people.

Allergic reactions are possible, especially in people sensitive to seaweed or seafood. Stop using it and seek medical care if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing.

Dosing

There is no official or standardized dose of Ecklonia cava. Studies have used different branded extracts at different amounts, so there is no single recommended dose for the general public.

If you choose to use it, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the suggested amount. A pharmacist can help you review the product and decide whether it is appropriate for you, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.

Ecklonia Cava: Common Questions

What is Ecklonia Cava used for, and does it work?
People use Ecklonia Cava for many reasons, but the evidence varies by use. According to the Natural Medicines database, there is at least some clinical evidence supporting Ecklonia Cava for Hypercholesterolemia. For most other uses it has been studied for, the evidence is currently insufficient to rate. See the graded list on this page, and always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor.
Does Ecklonia Cava interact with prescription medications?
We do not currently list any known drug interactions for Ecklonia Cava. This does not guarantee that none exist, so always confirm with your pharmacist before combining it with your medications.
How are Ecklonia Cava interactions rated?
Each interaction is graded major, moderate, or minor based on how clinically significant it is and the strength of the evidence behind it. Major interactions are the most serious and are best avoided, or used only under close professional supervision.
Is it safe to take Ecklonia Cava with my medications?
It depends on the specific medication. Some combinations are fine, while others call for monitoring, timing changes, or should be avoided. Check your exact drug above and confirm with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing anything.
Where does this Ecklonia Cava interaction information come from?
Our interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database — an evidence-graded reference for vitamins, herbs, and supplements — and is reviewed by licensed HelloPharmacist pharmacists, who may add clinical context.
What is Ecklonia Cava used for?
It is a brown seaweed extract most often taken as an antioxidant. People use it hoping to support heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, though the evidence for these uses is still limited.
Is Ecklonia Cava safe?
It has been used in some short-term studies without major problems, but long-term safety is not well known. Because it contains iodine, people with thyroid conditions and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid it or use caution.
Can I take Ecklonia Cava if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
It is best to avoid it. There isn't enough safety data, and seaweed can be high in iodine, which can affect both mother and baby.
Does Ecklonia Cava really work?
No use is firmly proven. Most studies are small, preliminary, or done in the lab or animals, so it should not be used in place of proven treatments.
