Zolpidem falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist with goldthread and your sleep aid zolpidem. Goldthread's main active compound, berberine, may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear zolpidem. If that enzyme gets blocked, zolpidem can hang around longer and build up. Since zolpidem is active as-is (not a prodrug that needs switching on), that means you could feel its effects more strongly.

In real terms, that might look like extra drowsiness, grogginess the next morning, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet. That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Food amounts are unlikely to matter, but concentrated berberine supplements are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining.

About Zolpidem

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand names: Ambien CR, Intermezzo, Sublinox

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
