Why this applies to Clonazepam

Clonazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for clonazepam: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear it out. Goldthread contains berberine, which in early lab work seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in your body, clonazepam could hang around longer than usual, and the effect might build up.

What would that look like? More of the things clonazepam already does, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady on your feet. The good news is that this concern is purely theoretical right now, based on how berberine behaves in test tubes, not in real people. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially at concentrated supplement doses.

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.
